Pink hugs in the Media Center

Pink "hug" chain in the Media Center

J. Rascoe with "hug" chainWhen Jennifer Rascoe, Creekside Media Specialist, was out on extended medical leave for most of the first semester, one of the things she missed the most was her students and their hugs. She realized that when she returned to work after completing treatment for breast cancer, her immune system would still be compromised.

Mrs. Rascoe collaborated with Creekside parent, Vanessa Sutton, and came up with the idea of a “hug chain”. During her first week back, Mrs. Rascoe spent the week teaching about germs and hand washing, and explaining to the students that due to an illness she would not be able to hug all 800 of them like she used to.

She asked each student to decorate and write their name on a pink strip of paper.  The pink strip would be a “hug” to her from them.   They folded the strips into loops and connected them, and CES Physical Education teacher, Joel Tise, and Library Assistant, Ashley O’Rourke, hung the chain of “hugs” from the lights in the Media Center ceiling. Students enjoy trying to find their “hug” among the decorative chain, and one student found her hug out of the almost 800 loops!
